Out of place here at the capitol,
Cats scared and skinny stalk plump squirrels –
Apples of lunchtime eyes.

Imagine skateboarders on west steps of capitol
Romping and determined
Challenging you to get physical
Daring you to defy gravity

On brilliant winter mornings,
The governor ventures into his backyard.
Hands cold,
He reaches for an orange.
Slices it.
Turns toward work,
Mouth tingling with the short sweetness of power.

Early eighties

Guardian angels watched
Not angelic
Young studs protecting fair damsels
Challenging violators
Embarrassing the man
Freedom isn’t pretty
It was gritty homeland security
