Dear Jim,

How are you? I’m sitting outside at my favorite coffee shop. I just said hi to a young Asian women who sat down across from me. I was looking at her sleek expensive computer that is as attractive for a computer as she is for a woman. She was amused by my gaze at her PC. We made good eye contact.

There was another young woman sitting at the table to my right. She was tall and white. She was wearing shorts and sandals and had backed her chair away from the table to face my table. Her legs were stretched out and her feet up on the seat of the chair in front of her.

When I glanced at her feet, her toenails had horrible baby blue polish. I thought ”Oh Christ!”. It’s the shade of the season, so for the rest of the Summer I’ll be seeing toenails of women who have no sense of color.

Before the Asian woman sat down, two cute 18 year olds stood across from me. They were talking.

You know how we used to wear worn out jeans? We wore through the denim so that white threads of the material were visible. The more knee there was the longer the white threads of material were.

Well, one girl had really short shorts. The front covering her pockets was so worn and the threads so long, that you could see the whites of the pockets. I could have peeked at her undies if I wanted, and if she was 28 I would have. But 18. I cringed.

Remember the term root huggers? It always cracked me up.

What was great about the Asian women was that she was dressed modestly not sexually. I could have looked at her all day.

There’s been sad news in the world of famous people. A week and a half ago a celebrity writer and a celebrity fashionista killed themselves. They were boomers.

The media is talking about depression and getting help, about staying connected to your family and friends and neighborhood. But nobody has mentioned that these two were boomers.

We boomers took ourselves too seriously. We still do. We isolated ourselves even further from our stifling Godless culture when we claimed to know all the answers and to have the right to do anything we want.

When I saw the news I thought ”What’s wrong with us boomers?” I wonder how many people made the connection?

You should have seen the photos of the writer. He was very striking, very handsome. He looked like a man of the world- sophisticated and successful, somebody who would attract attention as soon as he walked into a room; somebody you would look to for wisdom; somebody who made you wonder how come you aren’t like that.

I was afraid when I saw the news. I had envied his success – a cook who became a great and famous writer. Now he’s dead. Am I supposed to be happy?

Another thing the media hasn’t mentioned is that boomers have contributed to the destruction of America and Western Civilization. So you can say it serves the boomers who kill themselves right, for boomers have insisted on destroying western culture. Or you can say the boomers have led the nation into the sewer, but they are not mature enough to face their shit so they kill themselves.

Ten years ago I read the beginning of his most famous book. He was working in a restaurant in the seventies. He talks about how the staff used to steal from the owner.

He told a story about the time the crew was cooking for a wedding reception in the dining room. The bride came into the kitchen, said something to or looked at the chef, then they went outside. The chef pulled up his apron, pulled down his pants, then fucked her against the dumpster.

I put the book down. I was disgusted. Like I wrote to you in July, “My generation!!”

Sunday is Father’s Day.

Friday, December 1

Dear Jim,

What a great Fall. The sycamores are beautiful. A lot of leaves have fallen. We´ve had perfect temperatures. There has not been a lot of wind. And the hills are green, though barely.

Today I talked with dad. I felt sad listening to him. He needs people to tell him he is a wonderful man and has led an exemplary life. He is helpless and needs a thousand hugs.

He is slipping. He said, ¨The days are getting longer.” Then I said, ¨No dad. They are getting shorter. Today is December 1st.¨

Twice more he said the days are getting longer. I said, ¨No. They are getting shorter.¨ He said, ¨The 25th or something, then they´ll get longer.¨ I said, ¨The days have been sunny so you think the days are getting longer.¨ ¨That´s right.¨

It is supposed to be sunny through next week. This is the kind of weather you would ride all day in in Golden Gate Park or the Marin Hills.

Remember that Christmas I gave you the baseball book with the painting of Big Rec on it? I think of the games we used to watch there. A lot of times it was really cold.

I´ve been thinking of San Francisco a lot. The City had great baseball fields – Big Rec, Funston, Balboa Park. I liked Crocker Amazon field best because of the dugouts. They were real dugouts. Dug out, cemented, stairs put in, and a roof put on. Very classy.

That was when The City and the nation had confidence in themselves, and the money to spend on classy things. When I was in high school those dugouts were also used as watering holes on Friday and Saturday nights. So many wonderful parks were made a lot less wonderful by the kids in the seventies who were always out drinking.

I think about this all the time. We boomers led the nation down the tubes. We owe the country a huge apology. It probably wouldn´t forgive us, but we don´t deserve it.

I´m listening to a book about a forty-three year old black man who got strangled to death by a cop on Staten Island three years ago. The guy was selling cigarettes in a park. He sold them for a lot less than they cost in a store.

A huge tax had been put on cigarettes in New York City after 911 to pay for reconstruction. But people wanted affordable cigarettes. So cases of cigarettes were bought out-of-state and brought into NYC where people bought them from guys like this forty-three year old.

The man started selling cigarettes when he got out of jail for selling drugs. He figured selling illegal cigarettes would be better than returning to selling drugs. But the cops did not want a black man selling illegal cigarettes in this park across the street from a fancy apartment house that had just been built.

The author talks about jail. He says when Marion Cuomo was governor of New York, 20-30 prisons were built.

The Progressive Media also talks about the prison boom of the eighties and nineties. The Progressive Media says the boom was a plot to put black and brown men in prison.

But the Progressive Media forgets how violent black guys were in the sixties and seventies – how many white guys were beat up. I´ve been thinking that the so-called revenge of Middle America against Black America may have really been pissed off white boomers who remembered getting beat up in high school by black guys, being afraid to take the bus because of black guys, or having to transfer to a different school because of the black guys. Progressives are offended by such a statement.

It´s a great book. Great narrator. It´s nice to save my eyes listening instead of reading.

Well Jim, there isn´t a lot of razzle dazzle in this one, but I wanted to stay in touch.

Sunday July 2

Dear Jim,

It’s been a long time since I have written to you. I have never gotten over you. I haven’t been able to fill the void you left.

Today I went to Capitol Park to observe a rally to impeach the president. There was only 160 people. It was the same old progressive bullshit: pro gay, pro unwed mother, the evil corporations, the wonderful non-western religions, the victims of white oppression.

Not a word about responsible parenting, how much unwed mothers cost the country, how there is nothing for boys and men to do except get fucked up and wander around.

It was a nice day. While I was sitting on the lawn, a young guy came up to me and handed me a flyer. We talked a few minutes.

He explained to me some of the things the rebellious young democrats are working on. They are trying to make the Dems the party of the people. I hope it happens.

It was nice to talk to a man. I ache so much to talk to men. Earlier in the rally I talked with a guy my age. He was wearing a marijuana baseball cap and a marijuana T-shirt. He showed me his ID for the marijuana dispensary.

He wants marijuana to be legalized. He told me a pollster said that most of the people who smoke dope are 65. Isn’t that incredible? My generation!

What was good about you is you hated the drug scene. It amazes me that so many people our age smoked dope every day until they were 40.

Which brings me to the impeachable president. He is the third boomer president and the third boomer president to be a teenager.

Slick Willie got a blow job from a 22 year old. Bush dressed as a pilot to pretend he was a warrior as he walked onto an aircraft carrier. This idiot constantly makes inappropriate remarks. At 70 he still wants to “Let it all hang out man.”

Well, that’s it for now Jim.

I will write later.
