Track walkers
Train rumbling by
Boys wind up
Aim rock at boxcar insignia’s.
”Iron Man Joe!
Christy Mathewson!”
Observing the motion
Feeling the rush
They throw again and again.
Then the train hurries to the dugout.
Fists on hips
Looking down the track
They wait for the next batter.

Great hurlers
McGinnity and Marquard threw faster,
But Matty was the master;
Depending on finesse when there was no need for power –
Christy proved the best. He had the longer hour.

Late bloomer
Iron Man Joe came up at 28,
An inspiration to us all;
To wait diligently for our call,
Then prove ourselves great.

Wisdom
Chadwick knew what Americans had pent up,
That we should go outside to play a game we love,
Strugglin’ with demons exercise sets freein’.
Flaunting beauty and youth,
Feelings of rage and resentment challenge truth.

Troubling times
Peak of macho world.
McGraw’s lips like Casey’s curled.
Proud and defiant.
Most hated of Giants.

St. Matty
Rowdy New York City
Idolized gentleman Christy Mathewson.
He didn’t play dirty.
Got down to the nitty gritty.
Had lots of bad luck.
Kept his head up.
Was dignified to the end.

Class struggle
Matty showed the working stiffs
You could be rich and tough.
They couldn’t get any hits.
He threw murderous stuff.
