All over town

1900’s. Baseball everywhere.
We understand the game’s presence,
Remembering graffiti in the eighties,
How it made us tense.

The outfielders

Ty and Wahoo Sam,
Struggled to be the man.
Sam had more power.
Ty burst into flower,
Blooming all over the place.
The one we dream about today.

Turn of the century

They grew up on horses
Retired in cars.
Leaving bars
They glimpsed stars,
Remembering prairies after a game.
Their glove a pillow.
Boys dreaming of fame.

Great hurlers

McGinnity and Marquard threw faster,
But Matty was the master;
Depending on finesse when there was no need for power –
Christy proved the best. He had the longer hour.

Late bloomer

Iron Man Joe came up at 28,
An inspiration to us all;
To wait diligently for our call,
Then prove ourselves great.

Troubling times

Peak of macho world.
McGraw’s lips like Casey’s curled.
Proud and defiant.
Most hated of Giants.

Class struggle

Matty showed the working stiffs
You could be rich and tough.
They couldn’t get any hits.
He threw murderous stuff.
